OB3YdotCOM

ob3y/data

For a while now. I’ve been really frustrated with ob3y/data

What I’d envisioned for this portion of the site, was something that would add content, and community to the site, something that people could use, revisit and enjoy during the day.

Sadly, the implementation of pligg that I was unseeing was not doing it for me.

I wasn’t happy with the software, and didn’t have the interest or time to learn it well enough to become happy with it. Part of that was the template engine, (Smarty) I just wasn’t interested in learning a new language to drive one portion of the site, just to integrate it into the rest of the site.

Also, it didn’t seem like user generate news content was really what ob3y needed, or wanted. So, I went looking for something else.

I thought Forums might be nice, something like phpBB which I may still implement, as I like the idea of having a robust forum application running on the server. However, a forum didn’t really fit into my idea of better content for the /data section of the site. While I was pondering, I started looking at Drupal, and the more I looked, the more I liked. Drupal, will do a hell of a lot, and it’s skin able and has well written modules that should let the site evolve as it becomes clearer, what needs to be asked of it. I installed it last night, and configured it a bit.

At the moment, you can create a user account (Still don’t have a single log in system written yet.. sorry) create content, create stories, add to the forums on the data site, respond to forums on the site, created and edit a book (or any other document that you might want to collaborate on) and .. it even does RSS aggregation… how sexy is that? At the moment, there are only two feeds set up, since I’m basically just now getting the nuts and bolts configured.

So please! Take a look, play with the data section. Sent me feedback as to what other features you’d like to see!

My Black List

March 20th.

I got annoyed. People pounding on my door and using system resources that could better be put towards my crap. (www.ob3y.com/calendar www.ob3y.com/data ) Just to name a few! On that auspicious day of me wanting to stick a foot up someone’s parallel port. I installed a Perl script that, after 10 failed log on attempts, adds you to the hosts.deny list. In laymen’s terms, hosts.deny is my computer, much like a three year old, covering it’s eyes and pretending not to see you, no matter how hard you yell “Olli Olli oxen free! “

Here is the list so far. )
In closing. Asshats.

Good news… Bad News. Beta News.

Well.. this is why they call it beta right? In an effort to make the data.ob3y service better, I upgraded the software from pligg beta 6 to beta 7. Trust me, it’s much nicer. Shinier and way cleaner. Also, new URL. The site is now hosted at http://www.ob3y.com/data

But.

In my sort of tired state. I deleted all of my tables.

Guess who hasn’t been doing nightly backups of the database…. Yeah.

So if you had an account, or had submitted a story, it’s gone the way of the Dodo. (sigh)

Please do take the time to recreate your account, and if you could please submit something to the site, I’d really like to see if the bugs I had been working on fixing got fixed, for example, can I now surf from page 1 to page 2 of a category.

Speaking of which. Suggestions on Categories?

Streaming audio is back online

The ob3y music stream is back online. Please feel free to listen and feedback to the comments section. While the bandwidith I have to run off of is pretty low, the ram and CPU Speed on the encoder should improve performace quite a bit.

At the moment the Voteing functions are still offline, since I upgraded the encoder and that messed with my code a bit. :(

Enjoy!

Wanna be famous?

Dear talented and Generous web designer type person…

As you may or may not know, I’m working on my website ob3yDOTcom I’d like it to be filled with lots of cool dynamic content (which I’m working on) and I’d also like it to look really spiffy and cool. (which I’m also working on) But I’m a bit hung up. I want to redo my menu, as I’m not really thrilled with it. Wanna build me a cool image that can be chopped up and made into a menu? Hmmm? I’ll proclaim your greatness on the site and here in the blog…. Just Think… you could be famous on my blog! How often do you get that offer? Anyway, I’m looking for something that look like a keypad or futuristic control panel that can just “float” off to the right hand side of the screen. Possibly with a rollover from Hex to English on the menu items. Anyway, if interested, drop me an email or a comment.

This has been a blatant pander for your talent brought to you by ob3y.com.

Server outage

So Ob3y.com went down. Then it came back. It seems Comcast and I had a little dissagrement. They wanted to get paid, and I wanted them to wait untill I was damn well ready to pay them. In the end.. they won. So.. on that note. Google adds for the news site when it goes up? Yay? Nay?
